Vegan Pregnancy Wisdom

Patrick Holford is a world renown nutritionist and has written several books on pregnancy and children. One of the courses in our members section features him presenting a course of three videos on the best nutritional practices for Before, During and After Pregnancy.

The nutritional research seems fairly adamant that supplementing fish oil during pregnancy is good for your brain as well as for your baby’s. So, what is someone who is vegetarian or vegan supposed to do ?

There are alternatives. There are vegan omega oils like Sports Research, Vegan Omega-3 Softgels that are exclusively derived from plant-based algae oil.

There is also a seed mixture recommended by Patrick Holford :

  • Create a mixture of seeds in the following proportions one half to be flax seeds, and one sixth each of pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds.
  • Grind this blend in a clean coffee grinder and sprinkle on cereals, soups or salads.
  • Take one to two tablespoons a day or a desert spoon for kids.
  • Ideally make fresh or if you need to keep, keep up to three days’ worth in the fridge in an airtight jar.

If you prefer to take a fish oil, then you need to ensure you take a very high quality one so that one does not expose your baby to too much mercury or plastics that now pollute much of our oceans and enter the food chains.

Perhaps nutrition is not the only factor you wish to consider. If you believe in karma, then you may wish to consider the karmic view of taking something for your own and your baby’s benefit that causes the death of another animal or fish.

Though there is some argument to say that you are not able to incur karma on your baby’s behalf, but then again perhaps you would not consider taking a fish supplement only for your own benefit.

You need to make a value judgement based on your own moral perspectives as to what you consider to be the best approach.
